Grand Canyon River Trail
All original contents copyright  2018,
Technically, Bright Angel Trail terminates at Pipe Creek
Beach, after running 8.1 miles (13 km) from the rim of
the Grand Canyon. There is no sign to designate its
start, but River Trail begins at Pipe Creek Beach and
forks to the left to lead you to Bright Angel Campground
and Phantom Ranch, or to the right to end at South
Kaibab Trail.  (See
map).

Perhaps, since it is only about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long,
there is little published information about the River Trail.
If you imagine that it is a smooth, level hike along the
river as I did, you are wrong.  The river trail is carved
into the rock on the side of Grand Canyon and rises and
falls several hundred feet (90 m) as it tracks the river.

There is also an area of very loose beach sand, called
the “sand dunes” about a mile down the trail soon
before you reach the Silver Bridge.  The sand can be a
difficult trudge if you are fatigued.

The views along the River Trail are spectacular, and
time passes quickly, especially when you see the Silver
Bridge, your first opportunity to cross the Colorado
River.  Once you cross the Silver Bridge, you can
replenish your water and walk along the North side of
the river to cross the Black Bridge and head up to the
rim on South Kaibab Trail.  Alternatively, you can re-
cross the Silver Bridge and stay on River Trail until in
joins South Kaibab trail a bit South of Black Bridge.  Not
many people use the River Trail between Silver Bridge
and South Kaibab Trail, probably because of the
attraction of crossing one of the bridges and the
availability of drinking water on the North side of the
river.  However, all the mules coming down Bright Angel
Trail take the River Trail to South Kaibab Trail because
the only bridge they cross is Black Bridge.  When you
join South Kaibab Trail there finally is a sign designating
River Trail.
